A fully-loaded IKEA PAX wardrobe in Dubai Marina survived four moves with the same owner. A shorter PAX in JVC collapsed on its first disassembly because someone tried to take it apart with it lying on its back. The difference wasn't luck — it was technique, the specific PAX config, and whether the original build used cover plates on the back panel.
IKEA PAX is the most common wardrobe in Dubai expat homes. Home Centre, Pan Emirates, and built-in developer wardrobes each have their own quirks. Here's the field guide.
IKEA PAX: What Actually Survives a Move
PAX frames are 236cm or 201cm tall, 50cm or 100cm wide, 35cm or 58cm deep. Construction: hardboard backing stapled + glued to a MDF frame, with metal rail and plastic dowel joinery at the corners.
PAX configs that survive disassembly well:
- Any PAX 50cm wide — manageable to disassemble and reassemble
- PAX 100cm wide with ONE interior KOMPLEMENT shelf system — the shelves come out cleanly, frame splits apart
- PAX frames in standing position during disassembly (NEVER tipped on their back)
PAX configs that often don't survive:
- PAX frames with full internal KOMPLEMENT drawers, especially soft-close drawers — the drawer runners are glued in and disassembly often strips the holes
- PAX that have been in place 5+ years — glue has cured harder than the MDF, back panel will likely split when removed
- Old-generation PAX (pre-2017 models with the pressed hardboard back) — these rarely survive a full disassembly
The Hardboard Back Panel Problem
The weakest point on a PAX is the hardboard rear panel. It's stapled (not screwed) and glued in during original assembly. When you remove the screws holding it, the glue often means the panel tears along the staple lines rather than coming off cleanly.
Our trick: instead of prying the back panel off, cut it intentionally with a utility knife along the edges, then replace the panel at the new location with fresh hardboard from ACE Hardware (AED 40-80 per sheet, cut to size). Budget AED 150-250 per PAX for new back panels if you're determined to preserve the frames.
Home Centre Wardrobes: The Cam-Lock Lottery
Home Centre, Pan Emirates, and similar mid-market brands use cam-lock fittings (not IKEA's plastic dowels). Cam-locks are metal cylinders with a quarter-turn lock mechanism. Pros: they survive disassembly better than PAX dowels. Cons: they require a specific Allen key size (often 4mm or 5mm, not standard IKEA 5mm).
Most Home Centre wardrobes bought in Dubai use one of three cam-lock families. The problem is: if you've lost the tool, you need to find one that fits. We carry four sizes on every job. Most DIYers own only one.
Home Centre reassembly is 20-30% faster than PAX — cam-locks engage cleanly and the joins are stronger. The trade-off is lower cabinet detail (fewer shelving options, no soft-close standard).
Built-In Developer Wardrobes: Usually Stay
Most Dubai apartments and villas come with built-in wardrobes constructed by the developer. These are almost always fixed to the walls and ceiling via drywall anchors and L-brackets. You can technically detach them, but:
- The wall damage repair (drywall patching, paint) costs AED 400-800 per wardrobe
- Most of them are custom-fitted to the original room dimensions; they won't fit elsewhere
- Removing them often violates the tenancy agreement
Leave them. Tell your new landlord you'd like matching wardrobes installed — many will absorb the cost as part of the lease.
Pre-Move Prep
A week before the move:
- Empty the wardrobe completely — even hangers
- Remove all drawers; they transport separately
- Remove interior shelves and rods; bundle and label
- Photograph the interior for reassembly reference
- Find and organize the Allen keys / tool kit
- Check the hinges — loose hinges should be tightened, lost hinge screws replaced
Skipping the photo step is a classic mistake. Reassembly without reference means guessing drawer runner positions and hinge alignments. A 5-minute photo session saves 45 minutes of puzzle-solving at the new place.
Disassembly — Sequence Matters
The standard PAX disassembly sequence:
- Remove all doors (lift off hinges)
- Remove interior KOMPLEMENT (shelves, rails, drawers)
- Remove the back panel screws (but carefully — see above)
- With the frame still standing upright, loosen the top rail bolts
- Loosen side-panel joinery dowels
- Lift the top panel off
- Disassemble side panels and base as two L-shaped pairs
Critical: keep the frame upright during all steps. Tipping it onto its back with the joinery still attached creates stress on the corner joints that they're not designed for. We've seen a PAX crack down the side panel from being tilted during disassembly.
Transport: Pack Flat, Protect Corners
Disassembled PAX panels should travel:
- Stacked flat, in paired sets (left side with right side, top with base)
- Foam or blanket between each panel
- Corner protectors on the exposed edges (MDF corners chip easily)
- Bolts, cam-locks, dowels, screws in a labelled ziplock taped to the largest panel
Never stand flat-packed PAX panels on edge in a truck. Vibration creates micro-cracks along the MDF grain.
Cost to Hire Pros for Disassembly + Reassembly
Dubai-market rates for wardrobe disassembly and reassembly:
- Single 50cm PAX (disassemble + reassemble): AED 250-350
- Single 100cm PAX (disassemble + reassemble): AED 350-500
- 2-frame PAX setup: AED 500-750
- 3-frame PAX walk-in: AED 800-1,200
- Home Centre equivalent: 15-20% less than PAX (easier cam-locks)
- Pan Emirates or custom wardrobe: Quote on inspection; typically AED 400-700
Most Dubai movers bundle wardrobe disassembly with full moving packages at a small premium. If you book a full packing and moving service, expect AED 100-200 extra for each PAX frame handled. Going to a furniture specialist for assembly only (without the move) usually costs more than the bundled option.
When to Sell Instead of Move
PAX has a decent resale market in Dubai. Dubizzle listings for used PAX frames sell for 30-50% of original retail within a week. If yours is:
- 5+ years old and showing edge wear
- A smaller 50cm config that would only suit a very specific new layout
- Heavily glued (pre-2017 generation)
Sell and replace at the new location. The new PAX might cost AED 1,200-2,500 assembled, but the avoided disassembly labour, new back panel, and risk of damage often breaks even.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can IKEA PAX wardrobes be moved?
Yes, but with caveats. 50cm and simple 100cm PAX frames with shelves disassemble well. PAX frames with interior drawers, older pre-2017 models, or those in place 5+ years often don't survive intact. The hardboard back panel frequently tears during removal; budget AED 150-250 for replacement panels from ACE Hardware.
How much does wardrobe disassembly cost in Dubai?
Single-frame PAX disassembly and reassembly runs AED 250-500 depending on size and complexity. Multi-frame setups cost AED 500-1,200. Home Centre wardrobes are typically 15-20% cheaper than PAX due to stronger cam-lock joinery. Bundling with a full moving service usually adds only AED 100-200 per frame.
Should I disassemble built-in wardrobes when moving?
No. Built-in wardrobes are fixed to walls, custom-fitted to the original room dimensions, and usually covered by the tenancy agreement (landlord owns them). Removing them creates AED 400-800 per wardrobe in wall repair costs and won't fit your new space anyway. Leave them; negotiate wardrobes at the new property separately.
Can I move a fully-loaded wardrobe without disassembling?
Only small single-frame 50cm PAX models, and only on ground floors or buildings with large service elevators (interior width over 200cm). Empty the wardrobe first, then move it upright. Anything larger, multi-door, or going up stairs must be disassembled — trying to manoeuvre a loaded 100cm wardrobe through standard Dubai apartment doorways damages both.
